A Law Day sign above a judge's gavel and a book.

In what has become an annual tradition, Colorado’s 4th Judicial District (El Paso & Teller Counties) helps the community with a fantastic information event every May, in honor of Law Day.

For the third consecutive year, dozens of attorneys & other professionals in the community volunteer their time to answer questions for members of the public for several hours. For more in-depth information, attorneys offer presentations on specific topics of interest in a divorce.

And for the third consecutive year, our managing partner, Carl O. Graham, was asked to present on Maintenance & Child Support. Carl and Christina Eigel from El Paso County Child Support Services spoke to a packed room of people interested in this critical issue. Here is a PDF of the slideshow from the presentation.

Though this was the third such presentation, it changes every year, both to incorporate topics that people asked about in prior presentations, as well as to keep up with changes in the law. This year saw a major change in the law – a tax law change which came into effect this year means that alimony is no longer tax-deductible for decrees that enter on or after January 1, 2019.

That law changes not only how Colorado calculates maintenance, but Colorado law now “plusses-up” non-taxable maintenance for the purposes of calculating child support. For a complete discussion of maintenance in a Colorado divorce, see the Spousal Maintenance (Alimony) article in the Colorado Family Law Guide. Or, if you are interested in the calculation of child support, see the Child Support Basic Obligation article.

Carl is a sought-after speaker who frequently presents on family law issues, both to members of the public, as well as to fellow attorneys through CLEs sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association. As reflected in his biography, he has presented on Colorado divorce and military family law issues more than 25 times in recent years,
