Supreme Court of the United States

Congratulations Judge Mitchell Helton

It’s always satisfying to see the 4th Judicial District recognize “one of our own” family law practitioners by selecting her as a district court judge, if for no other reason then at least we’ll have a family law judge with a domestic relations background who can “hit the ground running” and not need time to get smart on family law.

It was just last year that Judge Mitchell Helton was appointed as family law magistrate for Division X, and it didn’t take long for her talents to be recognized.

And that is especially true with the most recent appointee to the district court bench of the 4th Judicial District, which covers El Paso and Teller Counties. Judge Helton is a wealth of family law experience, which she used to great effect for all-too-brief a time as magistrate. And before being appointed as a magistrate, I had occasion to be on the other side of cases against her during her 16 years in private practice as a family law attorney. (By the way, I can be this effusive in my praise since I’m about 98% confident she will never see this blog post, so it doesn’t count as sucking up!)

Here is a link to the official notice of appointment. Judge Mitchell Helton will be elevated to the 4th judicial district bench in just under two months, on May 2, 2020.

Help Wanted – 4th Judicial District Magistrate Opening

In a related development, thanks to losing a domestic relations magistrate, the 4th Judicial District is looking for a replacement! Let’s hope that Judge Helton’s replacement has as much family law savvy as she does.

Note – the image at the top of this post is actually the U.S. Supreme Court, not the El Paso County Courthouse. However, I wanted a bit of variety in the images, rather than using the same couple of courthouse photos repeatedly.
