Stephen McWhirter was born and raised in Fremont, Nebraska, but before becoming a lawyer, he served as a U.S. Army Signals Intelligence analyst. He graduated top of his analyst class (which helps him prepare his cases), and was a Russian linguist stationed in Helsinki, Finland, Moscow, Russia, and North Yorkshire.
After leaving the military and getting his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Steve spent a year teaching at Jiangxi University in Ganzhou, China, before taking his Juris Doctorate at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. While in law school, he practiced in the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office, taking several cases through a jury trial before he was even a licensed attorney, and practiced for a short time in the Civil Rights Clinic, representing a Supermax prisoner in federal court.
After law school, Steve embarked on a career in litigation and has practiced before many state and federal courts in Colorado, participating in mediations and conducting contested trials and hearings. Steve switched to family law and has applied his litigation expertise to this area since 2021.
Every family case is different and has its nuances. Steve lives by the credo that every client deserves an attorney who understands these nuances and finds the right approach for his or her scenario. This is very often accomplished at the settlement table, but if your case must go to a hearing, Steve is no stranger to that arena either.
Steve lives with his wife and daughter in El Paso County and loves every minute of it. The family enjoys Colorado’s great outdoors and can often be found on the state’s hiking paths or kayaking in a lake. Steve is a member of the Colorado Bar Association and the El Paso County Bar Association.
